Around 8:00 PM, the sun starts to dip, the humidity breaks just enough, and a faint, cooling breeze rolls through the trees.
This is my favorite time of year to talk about fire.
While it might seem counterintuitive to think about heat when the thermometer hit 90 earlier that day, a fire feature isn't really about warmth in late July: it's about the glow. It’s about creating a visual anchor that pulls everyone away from their screens and into the fresh air.

The biggest mistake I see homeowners make is choosing a fire feature based solely on a picture they saw on Pinterest without considering how they actually live.
When we sit down to plan a dream outdoor living room, I always ask: "Do you want a campfire or a lounge?"
The Fire Pit (The 360-Degree Experience): A fire pit is inherently democratic. Everyone sits in a circle, face-to-face. It’s perfect for families, roasting marshmallows, and big groups. It feels casual, grounded, and intimate.
The Outdoor Fireplace (The Architectural Anchor): An outdoor fireplace is a statement piece. It provides a "back" to your room, creates immense privacy, and acts as a windbreak. It’s more formal, like a living room that just happens to be under the stars.
The Art of the Low-Heat Glow
Honestly, in late July, nobody wants to sit next to a roaring wood-fired inferno. That’s why I’m such a huge fan of natural gas or propane fire features for our NoVA clients.
With a gas fire pit, you can dial the flame down to a gentle flicker. You get the ambiance, the "evening glow," and the mesmerizing movement of the light without the sweat-inducing heat or the smoke that lingers in our humid summer air. Plus, when a classic Virginia thunderstorm rolls in (and we know they do, usually right around dinner time), you can turn it off with a click and head inside without worrying about embers.
Insider Tip: If you're going with wood, stick to kiln-dried hardwoods. They burn cleaner and produce less smoke: a must when the air is already heavy.
Designing for "Flow" and Function
